A deadly 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Vanuatu on December 17th, leaving approximately 80,000 people in urgent need of emergency supplies and services.

Please donate now to provide immediate relief to children and families in Vanuatu.

The quake collapsed buildings, destroyed critical infrastructure and caused landslides. An estimated 80,000 people have been affected (including 40,000 children), with more than 210 people injured and at least 12 fatalities, however this number may rise as more information trickles out of the country.

“The immediate priority is to reach children and families with the life-saving support they need. UNICEF is on the ground, working with government, civil society organizations and other development partners to support the response efforts,” says UNICEF Pacific’s Chief of Vanuatu Field Office, Eric Durpaire.

Your support for our Pacific neighbours in Vanuatu is hugely appreciated at this critical time. Please make your donation now to help our emergency response.

How is UNICEF responding?

UNICEF’s is focused on supporting the government deliver life-saving interventions, including restoring water supply and distribution of critical supplies, supporting access to safe water and hygiene, nutrition and health services, education, child protection and social protection, including emergency cash transfers if needed.

We've dispatched 240 health and first aid kits to healthcare facilities and 6 high performance tents to be used as temporary first aid stations, paediatric and dialysis wards and ancillary services.

We're also providing water trucking and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services to the most urgent locations:

  • Over 7,000 people in Mele village have received 60,000 litres of water
  • 1,000 litres of water have been provided to 400 households in Mele Maat.
  • 1x 6,000 litre and 1x 5,000 litre bladders to the department of water
  • 2 x 1,500 litre water bladders
  • 4,000 water containers to affected areas

As the emergency needs become clearer, more supplies and support will be provided. However, we will need additional funds to continue our response in the days and weeks ahead, to help children and families recover from this traumatic disaster.
