  3. UNICEF Aotearoa appoints new Chair, Deputy Chair and two new Trustees

3 July 2024

As UNICEF Aotearoa New Zealand celebrates 50 years of positive impact on the rights and wellbeing of children, we are looking to the future with some changes to our governance team, balancing experience and tenure with fresh perspectives and capabilities.

Simon Wi Rutene, a Trustee since 2017, has been appointed Chair of UNICEF Aotearoa. Simon has significant governance expertise, including as an active trustee of multiple national and international organisations. He brings legal and commercial expertise as well as relationships across sporting, cultural and the commercial worlds.

Carmen Vicelich, who has been with the Board since 2019, steps into the role of Deputy Chair. Carmen has 20- years of experience in technology and data-driven entrepreneurship. She serves on a number of boards in addition to UNICEF Aotearoa.

We extend a warm welcome to Nick Wells, who recently became a Trustee on the Board, and a member of the Board’s Audit and Risk Committee. He is currently the Chair of Ngāpuhi Asset Holding Company Limited and brings a wealth of legal and commercial expertise.

Also joining the governance team is Jon Ramage. In addition to his communications and public relations expertise, Jon holds a deep understanding of UNICEF, having previously served on the UNICEF Aotearoa Board between 2012-2019, including three years as its Chair.

They join valued Trustees Anita Killeen and Mavis Mullins, who joined in 2017 and 2019 respectively. We want to sincerely thank Rachel Petero for her service as Deputy Chair over the last two years and who remains on the Board to continue her valuable contribution to our mahi. Our deep appreciation also goes to retiring Trustee Amanda Ellis. Amanda joined in 2022 and has been a staunch champion for putting the voice of children and young people at the centre of advocacy for climate action.

We are pleased to be marking this renewal of our team during a time of reflection and celebrate at Matariki, and excited to continue our journey in supporting every child to thrive.
